Austria Top Group D with 3-2 Win Over Netherlands
Austria stunned the Netherlands 3-2 in Berlin on Tuesday to win Group D at Euro 2024 and qualify for the knockout stage as group winners. The Austrians, who had never beaten the Netherlands in a competitive match before, produced a superb performance to come from behind and claim a famous victory.
The Netherlands took the lead through Memphis Depay in the 11th minute, but Austria hit back with goals from Marcel Sabitzer (31') and Xaver Schlager (34') to take a 2-1 lead into the break. Depay equalized for the Dutch in the 55th minute, but Austria substitute Emir Karic scored the winner in the 84th minute to seal a famous victory.
The result means that Austria finish top of Group D with seven points, while the Netherlands finish second with four points. Poland and Ukraine, who drew 1-1 in the other group match, both finish with three points and will have to wait to see if they qualify for the knockout stage as one of the four best third-placed teams.
Austria will now face the runners-up from Group B in the last 16, while the Netherlands will take on the winners of Group B.
